About the department

 The department of foreign languages was formed in 1982 with the aim of teaching foreign languages at non-linguistic faculties. The staff of the department teaches the following disciplines: English, German, professionally-oriented foreign language (English, German).

 The department is actively working in all areas: academical, teaching and guiding, research and educational.

 Capacity of the workforce of the department: Candidate of Sciences - 1, Senior Lecturer –6, Lecturer –6, 6 of them are Masters.

 Fundamental changes in the entire educational system of the Republic of Kazakhstan required a fundamentally new approach to the study of foreign languages by students of non-linguistic specialties.

Under  the current situation, the staff of the department is constantly improving professional skills by participating in regional, national, international conferences, seminars and trainings held by the Embassies of the USA, Germany in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Lecturers of the department actively participate in the work of language seminars. Their teaching activities are marked by international certificates.

 Lecturers of the department are working on the creation of electronic textbooks and teaching aids. A large bank of test assignments for students of all forms of education has been created, a training, monitoring and education program “EngTester” has been created. Lecturers of the department introduce innovative teaching technologies in the educational process. Classes in foreign languages are conducted using modern technical means, educational and educational literature of leading world publishers (for example, Oxford, Hueber, Longman, etc.).

 The staff of the department collaborates with linguistic faculties and departments of universities of the republic, near and far abroad, exchanging experience in the methodology of teaching foreign languages within the framework of the credit system of education.

 The creative team of the department is also developing a methodology for introducing the scientific concept of multilingualism, performing fruitful work to intensify language teaching.

Research activities and international cooperation carried out by the foreign languages department

During the period from 2016 to 2019. teachers of the Department carried out such types of research activities as: publication of articles by teachers in various scientific publications and conference materials, including joint publications with students; organization and management of research activities of students; preparation and holding of the annual International student scientific-practical conference "Knowledge of the world through a foreign language: country, history, culture"; preparation of students to participate in other international conferences and competitions; creation and management of students of the scientific circle; participation in scientific events organized in the KSU named after A. Baitursynov; joint research in the framework of the International cooperation agreement with the Department of German Philology of the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B. N. Yeltsin, Yekaterinburg.

 Since 2017, the Department organized a Circle of the English language, the students of which were also engaged in research activities. In 2017, three out of 12 students prepared publications for the collection of materials of the annual international student scientific and practical conference "Learning the world through a foreign language: country, history, culture".

In 2018, out of 10 students of the circle, two published articles in the annual collection. 

In 2019, four out of 15 students published articles in the collection "Learning the world through a foreign language: country, history, culture".

Student Karina A. participated in the international competition "the Best scientific article of 2018", which was held by the international Center for scientific cooperation "Science and education", Penza, Russian Federation, with the article "Word-forming suffixes in English and Russian languages" and received a diploma of 1 degree.

In cooperation with the Department of Germanic Philology, Ural Federal University, senior lecturer of foreign languages KSU Lazukhina  L. V.  with Professor and head of the Department of Germanic Philology of the Ural Federal University Sidorova O. G. conducted the study of interjections in Russian, English and Kazakh languages,the result of this study is  co-authored article "About the function of the lexeme "On" in the work of W. Shakespeare "Othello"" and "Analysis of interjections in Shakespeare's play "Othello" and its translation into the Russian language." 

One of the forms of international cooperation is the exchange of experience and discussion of educational and methodological issues through the participation of teachers of the Department of foreign languages of KSU and German Philology of Urfu in joint online events "Round table". In 2018, the discussion was held in accordance with the theme "Problems of teaching foreign languages to students of non-linguistic specialties". In 2019, the teachers discussed the issues of increasing the motivation of students studying foreign languages in the modern educational environment.
