The history of the humanities and social faculty is inextricably linked with the process of formation and development of higher education in the Kostanay region. On the basis of the teacher's institute began the work of historical and philological specialties. During the development of virgin and fallow lands, the need for teaching staff has increased.

In the mid-1950s, new faculties and specialties were consistently formed on the basis of the pedagogical institute. Over a long period of evolution took place humanitarian and social unit. Socio-economic reforms in the republic and the region have identified the need for reform of higher education and the organization of new specialties.

Faculties of journalism and psychology were created in the 1990s. Rector of the University Aldamzhar Z.A., Deans Sarkisyan Sh.V., Asanbaeva G.D.  played a big role in the formation of new units. During this period, the faculty of Kazakh philology was also opened, and Nurmukhamedov K.E. was appointed the first dean.

The humanitarian and social institute was created in the process of reorganizing the university in 2004, which received faculty status in 2007. It was formed on the basis of social and humanitarian specialties and departments. Aytmuhambetov Aydar Abayevich, Doctor of historical sciences, Associate professor, was the head of the institute, and then of the faculty. Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor Berdenova Saule Zhalgasovna is the Dean of the Faculty since 2014.

A special place in the development of the faculty is occupied by such scholars and teachers as Koldybaev S.A. - Doctor of Philosophy, Professor; Koldybaeva S.S. - Candidate of historical sciences, Associate Professor; Isina N.U. - canlilat of philological sciences; Urdabaeva L.E. - Candidate of historical sciences; Absadykov A.A. – Doctor of Filological Sciences, Professor; Sargsyan Sh.V. - Candidate of Psychological sciences, professor; Shayakhmet A.K. - Candidate of Philological sciences; Legkiy D.M. - Doctor of Historical Sciences; Bondarenko Yu.Ya. - Candidate of Philosophical sciences; Murzalin S.K. - Doctor of Philosophical sciences, Professor; Zhakyp K.Kh. - Candidate of Social Sciences; Kungurova O.G. - Candidate of Philological sciences, Professor; Zhusupova A.M. - Candidate of Philological sciences; Turezhanova S.A. - Candidate of historical sciences, associate professor; Makanov J.K. - Candidate of Social Sciences; Umbetova S.S. - senior lecturer and others.

A feature of the institute was the fact that it was formed from units that were previously part of other faculties. In the period of formation of the institute, the team and its leader had to face various tasks on the organization of educational and methodological support of the teaching and educational process. At the initial stage of the establishment of the institute, the introduction of new learning technologies, the formation of a collective and the development of student self-government were required.

During this period, a new stage of the formation of the higher educational system of the state was taking place as a transition to the European system of education - bachelor - master - doctoral. In accordance with the new requirements of the time, new curricula, educational technologies and a two-tier system of education are introduced at the institute: bachelor - master. The structure of the faculty was constantly improved. In 2016 - 2017 academic year, first obtained a license to carry out doctoral studies on a specialty "Philology", in the 2017-2018 academic year on the specialty "Journalism", in the 2018-2019 academic year in the specialty "Foreign philology".

In 2004 it operated 10 departments in the institute. Currently on the faculty there are 7 departments: Department of Philosophy, Department of Psychology and Pedagogy, Chair of Applied Linguistics, Department of Language Theory and Literature, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Foreign Languages and the Department of Journalism and Communication Management. Faculty of Humanities and Social universal, its lecturers in the humanities and linguists - are working at all faculties of the university.

Each department is unique in its own way - their teaching staff, research directions and methods of teaching. And at the same time, all departments are interconnected, providing comprehensive education of students in various branches of knowledge necessary for the formation of a qualified specialist, competitive in the labor market.

Today, Humanities and Social Department has a strong material and technical base, which includes computer labs, language labs, specialized classrooms of new technologies with modern multimedia equipment, a television studio, allowing students to conduct surveys and installation of videos.
